Good morning, everyone!  My name is Han Lily .My topic is “How to assess students in the classroom.”

There is “nothing”--I mean “nothing” more important to help students improve than student assessment. If you don’t believe me --- I will prove it to you. Today I will tell you about 3 things that I believe play a critical role in students’ assessment ..

First, all students are different, so assessment must be done on the individual level.

Second, I will tell you about another assessment that I use in my classrooms.

Finally, I will give you an example that shows how assessment has improved the performance of one of my students.

In my classrooms, some students are confident, some are not. Some are good at speaking, some are not .Some are well-behaved, some are naughty .I know these differences in my students through individual assessment , including: observation; interviews; and testing . What can I do from individual assessment ? Especially for those students who are lagging. I believe, a look from me can make them gain self-confidenceAn encouragement makes them feel warmthand a little card makes them feel pleased. Doing that, they are more interested in learning English. My students are so different that I should work with each of them individually to help them improve.

Secondly, I want to share another assessment with you, that is “ group assessments”. Most of the students like challenges. So I always design kinds of competitions among the groups . One is between boys and girls, which can challenge them both and narrow down the differences between them, and another is between students and the teacher, which can not only challenge the students but also the teacher. The group assessment is critical. It makes the students experience the joy of success while they are challenging teacher.

Finally, I want to tell you about one boy in my class. He knew nothing about English and was very naughty . One day , before the class I asked all the students to recite some words . He was very nervous

after he was asked to recite a word “spring”. When I called him in class, he recited the word very quickly. All the students were surprised. After that I drew a sprout with that boy’s name and a big tree next on the blackboard. Then I explained with a smile “I hope your English will be improved day by day just like a growing tree .” Since then , he wanted to believe in me . So without assessments, I would not have been able to help this boy .

In conclusion, I want to remind you of what I said when I began--“nothing”- nothing” is more critical to help students improve than to have the ability to assess their performance .For me, and my students, it has made all the difference !

Thank you !
